データはそれを取り巻くテクノロジーの効率化と高速化の果てに、メディアとしての伝達のための形態と機能と同等かそれ以上に、マテリアルとして、それそのものとしてのリアリティを持つことになった。それによってデータ化されたコンテンツがストリーム上で識別・処理・交換されるための様々な入れ物としてのメタデータ、データ形式、ハードウェアといったメディア特性そのものの存在がコンテンツそれ自体を決定し得る強力な影響力を持ち始めることになった。コンテンツを主体としてそれに適した形式を選ぶのではなく、形式そのものが逆説的にコンテンツを規定し、変容させる。”意味の乗り物(vehicle)”であったデータが”自律的なフライングオブジェクト”へと変貌したのである。ナムジュンパイクとブラウン管、ジョンケージとラジオ、ピエールシェフェールと磁気テープの関係性に見られるメディアと創造性におけるテクノロジカルなパラダイムシフトと同様の現象を見て取ることができる。 Læs resten

Tom Carter – Fireside Music and a personal appreciation of a Long Time Underground

The aptly titled arrangement Fireside Music takes place within the context of Kulturnatten, the Culture Night in Copenhagen. It is organized by Astrid Noacks Atelier’s curator and performance artist in her own right Jenny Gräf (who we interviewed earlier this year). The event will offer the opportunity to experience Tom Carter, Ka Baird who has been associated with the act Spires that in the Sunset Rise (who was portraited last year) and the Copenhagen-based american artist Jenny Gräf. F.E. Denning – Waves of unstoppable noise

F.E. Denning “Under the Linden Tree” (The Tide of the End, 2016) – Review by Andrew Hannah

On some ambient or drone records, there’s a feeling of stasis. As passages of music unfold – or don’t – as a listener you can feel moved without moving, your heart beats faster or slower, your synapses flicker to life … but physically things stay the same. It might be that this is the fault, or the intention of the musician, to highlight an inability to move or progress, to be stuck somewhere without hope of moving on.

The music of Copenhagen’s F E Denning does not feel like this; drones start small and rumble to earth shattering crescendos. While your heart pumps and your cortex is exercised, forests are decimated and cities crumble, laid waste by the force of Denning’s compositions on “Under the Linden Tree”.
It’s not just man-made or natural constructions being brought down on this wasteland of a record; Denning is turning his gaze on society from a point of isolation, away from the madding crowd perhaps sheltering from the gathering storm under the titular tree. Læs resten

CTM – Walking around blinkered, putting stones into the mouth (interview)

A couple of weeks ago I went to see CTM play a show in London, starting off a night of Nordic music, on a Thursday night. The venue was small and Caecilie Trier and Malthe Rostrup sidled on to the stage on the back of a particularly hyper electro track. The room fell quiet, and without a word the music started. 40 minutes later, after a set of Trier’s recent EP, “Suite For a Young Girl”, and a few other songs, the room was still remarkably quiet. Until the crowd knew it was definitely finished, no one disturbed. This is pretty special, for London on any night, let alone the one before the weekend’s first hangover.

Before the show I had sent Caecilie Trier some questions. Her answers are shedding light on her moods and methods in relation to “Suite For a Young Girl” but also giving food for thought as we can look forward to new music which may arrive in time for spring to wholeheartedly set in.

P/A: You are in your second formal music conservatory education, on top of the many years you’ve spent playing music before starting in the conservatory. Do you think it is necessary or advantageous to learn how to do things ‘by the book’ in order to constructively break the rules?
“I remember in an interview John Cage is speaking on this subject and he mentions Demosthenes. He was a Greek statesman in ancient Athens and he wrote speeches for a living, he was an orator. Demosthenes decreased his ability to speak by putting stones into his mouth. Læs resten

The Necks – Et livsværk bliver til (interview med Chris Abrahams)

Australske The Necks har udfordret os ved at udsende timelange hypnotiske (eller dødkedelige?) improvisationer i et velkendt trioformat, der tager selvet ud og lade musikken tale. Efter 25 år holder Chris Abrahams, Tony Buck og Lloyd Swanton stadig fast i den samme metode, som med tiden former The Necks til et sjældent livsværk i konstant udvikling. Dette interview er lavet umiddelbart inden The Necks’ fantastiske album “Open” (2013, eget label) og er oprindeligt bragt i Passive/Aggressive ZINE #4.

Historien kort: Trioen The Necks blev dannet i 1987 i Sydney. De udsendte deres første album, Sex, i 1989 og har siden udgivet 17 albums, heraf fire liveudgivelser og tre soundtracks. Musikken består af lange frie improvisationer, typisk af omkring en times varighed, og de er alle udgivet på cd, fordi de ikke passer til lp-formatet, bortset fra ”Mindset” fra 2011, der udkom både på cd og lp. Deres faste årlige turné om sommeren i Australien og årlige studiedage i Sydney bærer i sig selv et rituelt præg, og sådan har deres karriere gennem de sidste 25 år haft et konceptuelt strejf, selvom musikken i praksis er helt åben for indtryk. Chris Abrahams, Tony Buck og Lloyd Swanton har en baggrund i jazz og som studiemusikere for mere eller mindre tvivlsomme navne, men specielt Abrahams og Buck har en forbindelse til eksperimenterende musik i Japan og i Berlin, hvor de begge bor i perioder. På overfladen er udgangspunktet en helt klassisk jazztrio, men som improvisationsmusikere har de bevæget sig væk fra jazzen og ud mod trance, avantgarde og moderne minimalisme. De har som mål at opløse fornemmelsen af et selv og lade musikken opstå ud af, ja, hvad? Læs resten

Father Murphy – Italienske avantgardister fuldender Trilogy of the Cross (interview)

Den italienske gruppe Father Murphy har gang i et forrygende år, der har budt på intet mindre end tre udgivelser i bandets trilogy of the cross. Derfor er der nu optimale betingelser for at stifte bekendtskab med en evigt foranderlig kult (både i religiøs og populærkulturel forstand), der har en lang række større og mindre udgivelser på papiret siden 2005. Musikken er blevet mere og mere weird, men samtidig konceptuelt strammere og ekspressivt stærkere: et møde mellem støjens æstetik og en kirkelig messen.

Kernemedlemmerne er ‘Reverend Freddie Murphy’ og Chiara Lee, hvis musik allerede har fundet fans hos bl.a. Deerhoof, Dirty Beaches og Michael Gira fra Swans, men også til Danmark er der en forbindelse. Father Murphy har givet flere danske koncerter arrangeret af Escho og har turneret med Gud Er Kvinde og Iceage, hvilket måske giver en fornemmelse af spændvidden i Father Murphys projekt. Det religiøse aspekt har hele tiden udgjort en speciel overtone, fordi musikken eksplicit er inspireret af den katolske kirkes begrebsverden og sakrale lyd, men ofte med en mørk afstikker. Som en spirituel udforskning af den apokalypse (som kirken selv har opfundet) bevæbnet med droner og konkretmusik.

Travelling off the grid with Epic Vinyls from Brazil (interview)

In collaboration with Danish artist and dj Rasmus Schack, Passive/Aggressive is proud to present a very special mixtape by Epic Vinyls from Brazil. This mix is a 100% vinyl 25-track blend of native indian music, experimental 1970’s sound, capoeira songs and afro-brazilian ritual music and chanting. P/A: What is the background for your DJ and cratedigging moniker Epic Vinyls from Brazil, and why was it exactly Brazilian music that made it for you?

Ras Schack (Epic Vinyls from Brazil): “When I arrived in Brazil for the first time, I had already been an active DJ for some years and passing through the acid jazz, latin and chill out music styles I quickly found a natural interest in the Brazilian music scene and bought records from my first visits in 2000 — starting with the bossa nova-classics and Jorge Ben since my wife was a backing vocalist for him for two years. But I never had the time to enjoy the many vinyls I bought. I found a few favorite artists and stuck to them.

Upon returning from Brazil in 2013, I found myself unemployed for a period of 4 months and frustrated with my 5000+ record collection that I did not use at all and had not missed during my “Brazil time”. So I started to dig into it and quickly found out that my Brazilian records – at that time around 600 – were very special. Some of them very, very unique in sound and style and I started to label them “Epic”. And I started researching the artists and was completely overwhelmed with the richness of music. Ideas for themed mixtapes quickly came to my kind – and I was very keen on avoiding the standard bossa nova and Brazil funk/boogie mixes – I wanted to open some doors and ears to something different. Old but fresh!

I clearly took my name as a spin-off from “Awesome Tapes From Africa” – but seriously – the amount of quality music that was made in Brazil is insane. The unique cultural mix, the isolation during dictatorships and many regional styles matching the country’s size, there is so much music to be found. This has to do with the fact that there was 6 major record plants spread over the country and record labels that maintained studio bands on full-time contracts. Also huge numbers of 7 inch records were pressed as well. Læs resten
