PAN – Electronic music’s adventurous rebellion turns 10

English November 12 2018

PAN

PAN 10 Years feat. Bill Kouligas, Puce Mary, Tzusing, Eartheater, Amnesia Scanner, Objekt and M.E.S.H., Berghain, October 2018 – live report by Sandra S. Borch

Since its launch 10 years ago, the Berlin-based label has touched noise, drone, improv, techno, dub, ambient, and several other genres, stretching and redefining electronic elegance. PAN is as messy as it is elegant. PAN is complicated. PAN is hard to categorize neatly in specific words because we do not have such nuanced language for talking about music yet. Sandra S. Borch reports from PAN’s 10 year-celebration at Berghain, where PAN is still in the forefront of a scene that is far more complex than the common refrain of “adventurous electronic music” would suggest.

Physically Sick 2 – Music and medicine against legally administered poverty

Blog English April 5 2018 PS2_cover

By Emil Néné Rasmussen

In the always peculiar legal world of the USA, a particularly odd system is set in motion almost every time someone is held in custody or otherwise detained. The system is called bail, and it is the procedure of letting the detained person pay a deposit to the court in return for being released until their trial. While the exact cost of this procedure varies from state to state, depending on the severity of the crime, it has potentially destructive financial consequences for those impacted by it. No matter where one stands on crime and punishment, the matter of the fact is that 1: “We do not tend to confine the most dangerous – we jail the poorest among us”, 2: “Our jails are disproportionately filled with Black and Latino men” and 3: “Defendants sit in jail for long periods awaiting trial. Some defendants have even waited in jail for more than four years before trial”. (Alexander Shalom, “Bail Reform as a Mass Incarceration Reduction Technique”, 2014)

Berlin Atonal’s second incarnation quickly gained the status of an industrial techno institution, bringing some of the strongest names in the game to perform exclusive sets in a unique setting year after year. Now in its fifth year, Atonal 2.0 starts to show signs that it might need to rethink its formula a bit.

A significant part of the programme takes place at the club spaces of OHM and Tresor, but the large industrial space of Kraftwerk undoubtedly makes for the centre of the festival. Attending this space, which could hardly be described as “comfy”, is an experience in itself, although doing it for five days in a row can exhaust the powerful first impression.
